![]() Other factors often associated with hoarding include alcohol dependence and paranoid, schizotypal, and avoidance traits. Hoarding appears to be more common in people with psychological disorders such as depression, anxiety, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Prevalence rates have been estimated from two to 5% in adults, though the condition typically manifests in childhood with symptoms worsening in advanced age, at which point collected items have grown excessive and family members who would otherwise help to maintain and control the levels of clutter have either died or moved away. Importantly, a diagnosis of hoarding disorder (HD) is made only if the hoarding is not caused by another medical condition and if the hoarding is not a symptom of another disorder (e.g., schizophrenia) (APA, 2013). People who suffer from this disorder have great difficulty parting with items because they believe the items might be of some later use or because they form a sentimental attachment to the items (APA, 2013). Often, the quantity of cluttered items is so excessive that the person is unable to use their kitchen, or sleep in their bed. Hoarders accumulate excessive amounts of usually worthless items that clutter their living areas (Figure 2). People with hoarding disorder (HD) cannot bear to part with personal possessions, regardless of how valueless or useless these possessions are. Those who suffer from hoarding disorder have great difficulty in discarding possessions, usually resulting in an accumulation of items that clutter living or work areas. ![]() paranucleus (Noun) An accessory nucleus a smaller body in the cell resembling the nucleus.Figure 1.paranucleolus (Noun) A small condensed mass of the inactivated X-chromosome usually located just inside the nuclear membrane of the interphase nucleus.paranucleate (Adjective) Having or relating to a paranucleus.paranucleate (Adjective) Near and outside of the nucleus.paranuclear (Adjective) Near and outside of the nucleus.paranuclear (Adjective) Not currently having nuclear weapons, but having the capacity or infrastructure to build them in a short period of time.paranthracene (Noun) An inert isomeric modification of anthracene.paranormal romance (Noun) A subgenre of romance literature and speculative fiction involving paranormal elements, such as vampires, werewolves, ghosts, or time travel.paranomia (Noun) Verbal paraphasia, an aspect of aphasia, where the patient speaks a word different from the one they intended to say.paranome (Noun) The complete set of paralogous genes in a genome.paranoid schizophrenia (Noun) A form of schizophrenia that is accompanied by delusions, either of persecution, grandeur or jealousy.paranoid personality disorder (Noun) A mental disorder characterized by paranoia and a pervasive, long-standing suspiciousness and generalized mistrust of others.paranoiac (Noun) Somebody who has paranoia, a paranoid person. ![]()
